नेपालको पानी जनताको लगानी - Online Form

Invest in Nepal's Hydropower - Energy Ministry

Online form where you can show your commitment for investment

I saw a banner ad on onlinekhabar.com regarding an opportunity to invest in future of Nepal's Hydropower. When I clicked on that ad, this is where it took me...It was Energy Ministry's website...

The direct link is http://www.moenonline.moen.gov.np/login

The landing page on the site was a login page, which was a bit awkward and unexpected. For someone who doesn't know what the government is up to, it may be hard to figure out what this is all about. But I am well informed on recent developments in Nepali Hydro. I didn't digress.

I got super excited, primarily because this was my first online experience dealing with Nepal's government. How cool is that?

If you haven't read my other post on this blog, you should know that I lived in Nepal for 12 months in the year 2015. During my stay in Nepal, I had seen many long lines outside the banks and financial institutions, where people lined up for hours just to submit their form to purchase public shares each time a Hydro company was set to go public (HIDCL was probably the worst of all)

I never stood in line but I always wanted to make an investment in Hydro..

So, when I saw the same opportunity in front of me, at the convenient of my own computer screen, I jumped on it like a hungry lion on it's prey. Ok, that's an embellishment.

But, seriously, without wasting any time, I created a new account.

But before I created an account, I noticed there were couple of links at the top right of the page.

By clicking them, I quickly found that both those links have official document from the Energy Ministry and the Minister telling you a bit more about the government's hydro campaign - the kind of information you would expect to see on a well thought landing page..

If you don't know much about this investment program, it's a good idea to spend few minutes reading both those documents..I read both..

Then, I created a new account and logged in.

This is where it took me..a welcome page.

The welcome page didn't have much content or information. Again, that's certainly an area for improvement, although I am hopeful that will change in the near future..

I saw a link below the "स्वागत छ", and so I clicked on it.

Note: If you look at the top right where is says NP, that's where you can switch your page between English and Nepali. By default, the setting is Nepali. I kept mine as is.

By clicking on शेयर लगानी प्रतिबद्दताको फारम भर्नुहोस् link, it takes you to this glorious investment form.

The form looked like this....
The design of the form was simple and even responsive (meaning the form would nicely adjust to your screen size). Better than most of the online forms I have seen so far in various websites from Nepal. Great job bidhee

I filled out the form, one step at a time. The second to last step is where you review all the information you have provided, and finally, you then submit your form.

Few things you need handy while filling out..

  • नागरिकता नम्बर, जारी मिति, जारी जिल्ला
  • बाजेको नाम
  • पासपोर्ट नम्बर

If you are outside Nepal while filling out, you can enter contact details of your representative in Nepal, like your dad or brother, or sister. Someone in the family..someone you trust I guess...

Like I said, the form is simple and easy to understand. If English terminologies are easier for you to understand, make sure you switch to English version before you start..

I committed 10 lakhs. Good thing is it let's you make payments in installment over five years. Something to keep in mind when you decide how much to invest.

I distributed mine over 4 years; 3 lakhs X3 + 1 lakh in the fourth year.

Once you review all the information, go ahead and submit the form..

I didn't receive any email confirmation once I submitted..but it did show on-screen confirmation, which was good enough for now.

The whole process of filling out this Hydro investment form and submitting was very smooth. No glitches, no hiccups, easy.

It's sad I am saying this today but considering that it is the service provided by our famously dysfunctional Nepali government, even this simple "working" form made me feel so proud in so many ways. Kudos to the Minister and the team. A light at the end of the tunnel... powered by नेपालको पानी indeed!!

I will now patiently wait and see when/if I hear anything back from the ministry regarding this.

Just remember, what you are doing by filling out this form is just showing that you are willing to make investment through the नेपालको पानी जनताको लगानी campaign. You don't have to make any payment now.

Hopefully the energy ministry keeps it commitment to this hydro campaign, because that's the only way I will keep my commitment to the investment.

Online Govt services

I created this page to keep track of online services offered by the Nepal's government. I will also add direct links to those sites when available.

Slowly but surely things are finally moving in the right direction in Nepal. How effective will it be? That's yet to be seen...

As of today, this link takes you to a login page. If you already don't have a login, I don't see how you can register and create a new login from this page because that option isn't available right now. Hopefully they will change in the future.

5-star casino Tiger Palace in Nepal targets 430 million Indians within 6 hours of drive

I believe Tiger casino resort is a major project not just for the Lumbini area - it is a major milestone for Nepal's tourism industry that is struggling to lure 1 million tourists annually. That may not sound like a lot, for example, the city of Paris alone received 15 millions plus tourists in 2013..But that's Paris...

According to recent statistics, Nepal saw 700,000+ tourists in 2016. This number was said to match the pre-earthquake arrival rate. That's still 300k short of 1 million.

Tiger 5-star casino resort in Bhairahawa is expected to have 400 rooms after it's final completion. If they've 80% occupancy rate throughout the year on those 400 rooms (which may not be so much of a challenge when you have 430 millions living within 6 hours drive), that's 100,000+ visitors in a year. Assuming most of the visitors to the casino are foreigners (it's illegal for Nepalese to gamble in Nepal), this resort alone has the potential to become the "Paris" of Nepal and provide a significant bump to Nepal's annual inbound tourists numbers.

If you want to know more about Tiger Palace Casino in Nepal, below is an article that summarizes well on why this border location was chosen and who the target market is.
I believe this casino will uplift the lives of locals in the area in a very significant way, by creating jobs and other investment opportunities for the locals....

I was born (Bhairahawa) and raised (Butwal/Sunwal) in the area, so this topic is of particular to me..

Below is the article published in Forbes....
"India may be the next big thing in Asian gaming, and one of the region’s most nimble casino operators is offering investors a piece of the action. Silver Heritage Group began trading on Australia’s stock exchange last month as it takes aim on the Indian gaming market from casinos across the border in neighboring Nepal. The A$25 million ($19 million) initial public offering under ASX ticker symbol SVH valued the company at A$80 million.
Border casinos located in Cambodia and Laos, markets where Silver Heritage is active, serve players from Thailand and Vietnam with no casinos available at home. Macau, on mainland China’s doorstep, can be seen as the mother of all border casino areas. So the border casino concept has been proven to work across Asia, as has Silver Heritage’s approach to the regional gaming business.
Founded in 2003, Silver Heritage has built street cred in markets including Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, along with previous operations in the Philippines and Macau. Silver Heritage began as a provider of electronic gaming machines (EGMs), which company founders Mike Bolsover and Tim Shepherd tab as good way to gain market know-how and identify opportunities that slip under other international operators’ radar.
“We are a group that has always developed projects over time and only where we see significant competitive advantage,” Bolsover, Silver Heritage’s CEO, says. “We focus on mid-size opportunities and improving operating performance to international best practice standards. This strategy has allowed us to build significant regional expertise and local knowledge while growing the business and generating attractive returns on capital.”
In 2010, that approach led to Bac Ninh in northern Vietnam’s industrial heartland, about 40 kilometers (24 miles) from Hanoi. Silver Heritage entered into a services contract to help manage casino hotel Phoenix International Club. Early last year, in a former government hospitality facility, Phoenix was reborn as a boutique resort with 36 rooms and suites, a day spa and unique rooftop golf practice range. The new 1,500 square meter (16,020 square foot) casino has 12 tables and 72 EGMs, with up to 30 tables and 100 EGMs allowed under its license. The resort is 60 kilometers closer to Hanoi than any other casino, giving it an advantage with the capital’s expatriates – Vietnam’s casinos and slot parlors are open only to foreign passport holders. Phoenix International also draws foreign managers of manufacturing plants around Bac Ninh run by the likes of Samsung.
Silver Heritage entered Nepal, another foreigner-only casino market, in 2012 as an EGM supplier to casino hotels in the capital, Kathmandu. For a year, it ran a so-called “mini-casino” with three tables and 20 EGMs near the Indian border. After Nepal revamped its gaming laws, Silver Heritage won its own gaming license and last year opened The Millionaire’s Club & Casino in a Kathmandu five-star hotel with 22 tables and 36 EGMs. Its more than 15,000 loyalty card holders include at least 10,000 Indians and 3,000 Chinese, underscoring that, in addition to its value as a gaming facility, The Millionaire’s Club serves as a proving ground for Silver Heritage’s further casino ambitions focused on India. Earlier this year, Global Market Advisors pegged India’s gaming market potential at $10 billion.
“Management believes that India represents one of the largest untapped and materially underserved gaming markets in the world,” Silver Heritage writes in its prospectus, noting that only two Indian state currently allow casino gambling, each with constraints. “The Group considers that a cost-effective way to provide a compelling new proposition that is easily accessible by Indian gaming customers is by building substantial casino resort facilities on the border of India within Nepal.”
Tiger Palace Resort Bhairahawa is due open early next year as the first purpose-built casino resort in Nepal – in fact, in all of South Asia, according to Silver Heritage – located just over the border from India, with 100 five-star rooms, two villas, a gym, spa, swimming pool, restaurants, plus meeting and banquet facilities suitable for weddings. Tiger Palace Bhairahawa’s target market is 430 million Indians living within a six hour drive of the border in states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Future plans for the resort include 300 additional four- and five-star hotel rooms, and Silver Heritage has a location for a second border resort in its sights."

Outbound Tourism - Nepal

It may sound strange but outbound tourism in Nepal is growing at a rate that significantly dwarfs the inbound growth. Some of you probably would prefer to see just the opposite happening in Nepal. The sad reality is - that's not the case.

More and more Nepalese are choosing to travel outside the country during festive season. That's because kids are out of school and it gets cold in Nepal that time of the year.

If you are in domestic tourism, you would rather see Nepalese vacationers spending that money in the  domestic tourism. But hey if you have the money, you can do whatever you want with it.

I think one of the positive sides of outbound growth is that more and more Nepalese will be exposed to the tourism industry of another country. Even if one or two vacationers can learn from their own experience and brave it to try to replicate that in Nepal's tourism industry, the country may eventually benefit. After all, Nepal's growth rate in inbound tourism is still about 5% annual, and we haven't been able to hit that elusive milestone of one million tourists per year. Definitely, something is wrong with what we are doing..

So, what is really going on with the Nepal's inbound tourism industry? In other words, why are more foreigners not visiting one of the most beautiful places on earth?

At it's core, I believe the issue here is the lack of "digital" marketing know how among Nepalese entrepreneurs. I also believe it has something to do with the lack of IT infrastructure for payment gateway in Nepal. Except for popular sites like lonely planet or trip advisor, Nepalese entrepreneurs don't have the ability to take holiday bookings online. This is a big downside, and there is no one to blame for this.

I won't go in too much detail on these two issues. But I would like to point out one thing about marketing...

Marketing today has to be done online. This is where Nepali entrepreneurs are falling behind and thus, failing to drive the growth the country's tourism industry deserves..

Traditional ways of Nepalese tourism marketing has been about attending tourism related conferences and seminars in China, India and other countries, however, today, those efforts, although effective, are not enough.

Here's my two cents:

Every travel related websites I have seen from Nepal are a joke. I would love to see two things happening...
  1. A beautifully designed website with full attention to details such as:
    • Clear images.
    • Professionally designed and up to date information.
    • SEO focused blogs (very very important)
    • Creative vacation packages.
  2. Partnership with other web-based travel companies that can generate/sell leads for Nepal's tourism.
I have seen businesses advertising in google ads for matching keywords. I am not sure how effective those ad campaigns are. Because, once I clicked on one ad (I must confess, sorry), the landing page  page was totally irrelevant to the keyword it showed up for. It's sad the money is being wasted like that. I am sure some travel agencies are doing better with the adwords than others.

Back to Outbound tourism Nepal:

If I am not wrong, in 2016, Nepal likely saw 50,000+ outbound tourists.

After some digging, I found out that Bangkok is the most popular destination among first time international tourists. Thailand is close to Nepal, always heard of, and affordable. That's likely why.

Other popular destinations include Bali, Singapore, Malaysia, and Dubai.

The problem is the same with outbound tourism as well.

Travel agents in Nepal are not offering outbound Nepali tourists with much choices. I scanned about 5 popular travel agencies' website. And they all had one and same vacation package for Thailand : Bangkok - Pattaya Family package.

If this is in fact true in real life (meaning off line package is the same as online), then it's not fair to Nepali tourists. Yes, there are multiple countries you can choose from, but I mostly see one package per country. Why are we like this? खाए खा , नखाए घिच !!

Seriously, here is a Thailand page from one of the reputed travel agents in Nepal (I hide the name for privacy). So many things missing on this page. If online marketing matters to you, you know exactly what I am saying here...

But I could be wrong as well. These agents may have more options, say if you walked into their office. Just the website doesn't have the most up to date information. Good excuse.

And that's exactly my point.....If these Nepalese travel agents care less about their online presence (which is okay for outbound because they have walk-ins), then how can you expect the same travel agents to compete internationally for inbound tourists that are constantly surfing the web for more information and better deals?

Here is another one...

In my opinion, that's exactly the root of the tourist problem in Nepal. Businesses have not yet taken online branding very seriously. A facebook business page combined with crappy outdated and incomplete website won't do any good. You have to have both.

I think it's time to do something about it, if you know what I mean...

This is what I have in mind today...

First, build this business:

Then, this:

The website names are self-explanatory...now let me check if the domain names are available.

Update: Those two domains were already taken (I have linked them above, to give those sites much needed backlink from my blog).

Moving to Silicon Valley - California Drivers License

I moved to Silicon Valley California from Melbourne (Down Under), a city well known for it's public transportation (and it's coffee). Immediately, I felt the pressure of having a California Driver license.

The valley has mainly two public transportation worth mentioning (besides Uber offcourse). One is the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), and the other is the Cal-train. When I first rode on BART from Fremont to SFO, I almost cried. How can something so important be so bad? If you have been to Australia (or Europe), you know what I mean.

Then I realized this is America; the country of cars and highways.

For your information, if you live in the valley and work in the SFO city (downtown area), you can take a BART or Cal train depending on where you live. I know for sure that BART operates every 15 minutes and the last stop is Fremont station on this side of town. I don't know much about Cal train yet.

The thing about public transportation here is that, unlike in European or Australian cities, the network is very limited.

Now, back to the cars and the highways..the American way of life..

My Idaho licensed had expired on December 8, 2016. I had to get a new one from the state of California. I went to Fremont DMV on the 5th Dec to find out about the process. I also did a little research online but due to my circumstances I had to still clear up few things in person with the experts at DMV.

Here was my situation:

I have a US Driver License, but from a different state.
My driver license is expired (or about to).
I am living at my cousin's place. So, I don't have a physical address of my own.
I am a permanent resident (Green Card holder).

Here is what the lady at the DMV told me:

First of all, I didn't need to take the California Driving test as long as I had the license with me (in my possession), even if it was a expired one. This was a huge relief because I had heard the driving test is cruel. And, also I had only two days left before the license expired. So, there was no way I could have made it in time to avoid the driving test, if I had to take one.

Second, I DO need to sit down for a Writing Test. Ok, not so bad.

However, before anything could be started, I needed to establish a proof of residency in the state of California. For that I needed two documents that had my name and the physical address on it.

Which documents qualified? Here is the full list, directly from the DMV...

List of residency documents acceptable at California Dept of Motor Vehicle

I immediately called AT&T and asked them if they could provide me a cell phone statement. Because I had a prepaid phone, not postpaid, they couldn't help me with this. Besides, I had only signed up for their service just last week. It hadn't been a month. So, this didn't work.

The other option I had was the bank statement, but that was it. Just one proof of residence. I didn't have any utility bill, insurance, or credit card on my California address, yet.

But I wanted to buy a car. I was spending way too much on Uber and my cousin was probably sick of giving me a ride everywhere.

Here is how I could have had two documents even without moving in to my own apartment..

#1 Change my pre-paid to postpaid, then wait until the monthly statement was available and ready for print.
#2 Bank statement. I had already changed the address to California from Idaho.

But, I didn't want to sign up for post paid service yet. Because I was everything but settled in this new place.

So, that left me with only one other option - wait until I had a place of my own.

That way I could have a rental agreement to show. Remember, I was unemployed and with no insurance.

It took us 3 weeks to move in to our new place. I was so lucky my cousin had an extra bedroom in his house and willing to let me stay (along with my wife+5 year old daughter) for all this time.

When I finally had the signed lease paper, I then realized my bank address and the rental lease address, although both in California, were different. The last bank statement was in my cousin's home address and the new lease was, well, my new home address.

I had updated my bank info with our new home address few days ago but the new statement with the new address wouldn't be available for another 10 days or so.

Once again, I had only one proof of residency....

On the day we had moved, I rented a U-haul Van using my Australian Driver's license and did most of the shopping that day. Fortunately, our Uber frequency dropped because of this while we waited for the new bank statement.

Miracle happens
It was after a day or two since we moved in, I was again going through the list of documents that were acceptable in California DMV. I noticed something I thought would work..

If I went to the bank and asked them to print me a letter of some sort with my name and new address on it, that would work as the second piece of document.

This letter wouldn't be a statement but could be something called "Faith based document that includes the name and address of the issuing organization.", #8 on the list of document.

So next day, I went to the bank. When my turn came, I walked up to the clerk and asked her to get me a proof of residence (this is what they called in Australia, it's basically the letter I was talking about earlier). She didn't know what I meant. Then I explained her why I needed it.

At first she refused saying the bank doesn't issue any such letters. After she realized I wasn't ready to give up, she went to her manager, then printed a letter that displayed my account balance. It also had my new address on it. And it was on a wells fargo's letter pad with proper physical address and branch manager's name on it.

BINGO!!!

I called an Uber, then headed to the DMV after making a stop at Kinko's to print my signed lease contract.

Appointment vs. No appointment at California Driver's License

This is the line for all the people who arrive at the DMV with out an appointment.

The line for the ones with the appointment is much shorter and inside the building.

But, I was told if you wait for the appointment date, it can take up to few weeks. So, that was not my option. I decided to walk-in instead. And yes, you can walk in (or line up). It may help to be there early to avoid 2 hours plus of waiting in the line.

After about 2 hours and 15 minutes standing in the line, I was finally in. I recognized the front desk lady from last time, gave her all my docs and with a call # G141 I sat on one of the waiting room chairs.

After about another 1 hour and 30 minutes, I was called. I took the writing test, nailed it. There were 36 questions of which you can't have more than six mistakes to pass. I scored 34.

If you want to score 34 as well, here is a really good youtube video you should watch while standing in the line may be. If you can't score passing marks first time around, don't worry. There will be more chances but your margin for error will not be six. It will be less than that, more like only 3.
But you can take it multiple times if you have to.

Once you pass the test, you will get an interim license that will look something like this..

The real license will show up in the mail in about 10 business days, is what I was told.

Once I was done at the DMV that day, I decided to walk back home. It took me an hour and fifteen minutes but that was okay by me. After all, you can't have a bad day when you pass your California's Driver license test.
